even inmates deserve medical care (updated 4/29)

[this sucks] I hope she gets help soon. You know, part of the incarceration is rehabilitation. What message are they sending by not providing even the most basic services for her.
That concerns the elementary human rights and the access to health care it seems !
If her attorney is not returning the sister's phone calls, she needs a new attorney. It is unconstitutional to deny a prison inmate medical care, especially if she is in pain. The Missouri Dept. of Corrections was sued after an inmate went blind due to an untreated blood clot in the eye, and the U.S. District Court ruled in the inmate's favor. (I believe this was a recently tried case, too: I read about it last month in an online journal.) But someone needs to get their attention about this. The general public tends to be unsympathetic towards prisoners, but this is the United States: we should not be treating inmates as if we were a Third World country where a Bill of Rights doesn't exist. I hope this woman receives the care she needs soon.

Oh, it both hurts my heart and angers me to read this. She needs to keep on keeping on, pushing with boldness and force and determination toward getting the sister the help she needs. Yes, she's in prison; I worked in a prison and know the crap that goes on. And it is a verrrry different world. This, however, crosses a line so she needs to keep doin' what she's doin'. (and, speaking as a dental queen myself, she's right about tooth infections; they are very painful and potentially fatal, which is hard to convey/explain to people who haven't had serious dental problems.)
You are right HG, if the attorney is not returning her calls she may need to get a new attorney. I could understand if he is being very strict with his confidentiality issues, but if that is the case he could at least return a call saying so, that way she would know that she has to have her sister tell him it is okay to talk to her.

I will try to keep in touch with her while she tries to help her sister and let everyone know if she is able to get her the help she needs.
Thanks for the information Pax, I am going to be sure to pass it on to her.
You are so right WB, a person that has never had dental problems can not possibly understand how painful it gets.
This is not right. I wish I could say it didn't surprise me, but I can't. I've seen too many stories on the local news about prisoners who have died in the county jail because they were not treated for know medical conditions.

It's outrageous. If this was happened to a US citizen abroad there would be all sorts of protests. We are supposed to be a civilized society.
