still nasty weather
I knew it was getting bad out but I got to find out just how bad. Our friend that has a mobile home on our property, called me to let me know that she was stuck in the ditch on the hill where the pavement ends and the gravel begins. I was able to go and get her and get home, but it was very iffy at several points. There is just enough ice everywhere to eliminate traction, especially since the temp is fluctuating at the freezing point. The ice is damp from the rain and this makes it even slipperier.
I just checked the forecast that I am not so sure if I will be getting out of here for Christmas. The temperature is not supposed to get very much lower tonight, and it is supposed to drop during the day tomorrow so there is little chance that the ice will be going away any time soon. As I have mentioned before we are so far out at the edge of the county that we are one of the last areas the county's trucks get to. I am not even sure we will be able to get Maggie's car out of the ditch tomorrow, I am not sure that the tow truck would be able to get enough traction to get her out.

It is amazing how much of a difference a few miles one way or the other of hwy 70, can be. I know in "town" (St.Louis) there was mostly rain with a bit of ice whereas out here there was mostly ice with a bit of rain.
You stay safe and warm too
Look for someone that specializes in off-road recovery. It's gonna be especially expensive though if you try to get it out on the holiday. Have them come look at it and give a quote.
Have a Merry Christmas in spite of it all!
I would prefer snow too, the county road service seems to be better about working on the snow out by us than they are when the roads have ice on them. It is really sad that a gravel road is not traversable because of ice and there is not really several inches, just enough to cover all the loose gravel and make it a smooth sheet of ice. It does not help that our gravel roads around here are so packed they are smooth except on the outer edges right by the ditches. heck when we get a bad rain the smooth parts get so slick that it is just like driving on it when it is iced over. Every once in a while the county will get out to this corner and grade the road and put down new gravel. The only good thing about all this is that we do not get a lot of 'extra' traffic traveling on our road just the locals and that is fine by me.
