I want to say Hello to our newest members. I am so glad that you were able to find this group and I hope that as the group grows we enjoy many post from each other.
I knew it was getting bad out but I got to find out just how bad. Our friend that has a mobile home on our property, called me to let me know that she was stuck in the ditch on the hill where the pavement ends and the gravel begins. I was able to go and get her and get home, but it was very iffy at several points. There is just enough ice everywhere to eliminate traction, especially since the temp is fluctuating at the freezing point. The ice is damp from the rain and this makes it even slipperier.
I just checked the forecast that I am not so sure if I will be getting out of here for Christmas. The temperature is not supposed to get very much lower tonight, and it is supposed to drop during the day tomorrow so there is little chance that the ice will be going away any time soon. As I have mentioned before we are so far out at the edge of the county that we are one of the last areas the county's trucks get to. I am not even sure we will be able to get Maggie's car out of the ditch tomorrow, I am not sure that the tow truck would be able to get enough traction to get her out.
I hope everyone in the Midwest stays safe and warm during this winter storm weather we are having/getting. I have been hearing/watching news stories of the nasty weather some of the east coast states have gotten recently and I am hopeful that we will not get weather that bad here. Apparently the weather forecasters are still not too sure what we will get in my area, because the front is moving at a different speed than they originally projected.
I noticed that we have some more new members to the group. Welcome to the group.
I hope with the joining of new members we will get to hear and see post about each of our local areas. Maybe we will be able to share some of the things that we have in common as well as the things that make our individual areas of the Midwest different.
Something happened near by me that I know happens everywhere and it is sad to hear no matter where it happens. Recently a family of 8 lost their home and all of their possessions including recently purchased Christmas gifts, to a home fire. Fortunately none of the family or rescue workers where injured by the fire. They also lucked out when it comes to family photos, because they had only just recently moved in and many of their photos were still in the garage in box yet to be unpacked. They had only been in the home a couple of months.
The fire started on the back deck and caught the house on fire collapsing the roof. Only one of the children and the mother were at home at the time. The little girl noticed the deck engulfed in flames when she looked out the window and was able to warn the mother.
The most recent thing I have heard about the family is that the children are staying with family friends and they have received lots of donations of clothes and other immediate necessities but they were in need of food stuffs. This was a few days ago when I heard that so I am not sure what the status of donations needs are now at this point. I have not heard anything about the cause of the fire either, but I have not been paying close attention to the news the last couple days, except to check the weather report.
again stay safe and stay warm
This weather we have been having recently in Missouri is really playing havoc on everyone's immune system. Mine in particular. The congestion in my sinuses is putting pressure on my ears which in turn is messing with my equilibrium. I get dizzy just sitting still in my chair. Today started at about the high temperature for the day and has been steadily dropping all day. The wind has picked up too. It is supposed to be around 19 F tonight. That makes it hard for this little 100 year old house to hold it's heat. It is not so bad when it is not very blustery, but when the wind blows so does the heat in the house.
I have missed 2 days of work because of this dang cold. I can not miss anymore. I am going to have to tough it up and go to work tomorrow. Fortunately I know that my current boss is understanding about not having much energy when one is sick.
I decided to be a little creative and started a new group. Missouri and other 'Midwest' neighbors I know there is one other Missouri group on VOX, but it does not seem to be generating very many members so I thought I would start one that included Missouri's Midwest neighbors. I have a picture on it right now that is not a very good one of the Arch. I will have to look thru my old photographs and see if there is a better one that I can use as the profile photo. Who knows I may have to plan a trip downtown to get a new photo. It is always kind of ironic to me that when you live near a major tourist location, you hardly ever go to it if at all but if you are from out of town and especially out of state you are very interested in going to see this tourist spot. Well that is how it is with me, for most tourist locations in Missouri, but the Arch I have been to a few times, I just seem to take all my pictures of the area around it and not very many of the Arch itself. If any one has some Arch pictures they would like to share feel free to do so.
I don't know what exactly made me think about our non-profit groups funds, but I did. We are all worried that with the rising cost of caring for animals, we will have emptied our coffers come this spring. I know this is always in the back of our minds. I guess what brought it to the forefront of my mind is the fact that my roomate once again gave the radio station (yep the one that is my favorite) a description of a foster for their Pet of the Week that they do every Sunday.
Well anyway I have been trying to think of a simple way to try and remind people that we could really use donations. The donations don't even have to be money, they can be blankets & towels, pet food (cat and dog), leashes, bleach, paper towels, even coupons for doggy and kitty supplies. All of these non money items can still help us save money to use for vet bills instead. The value of these items can also be taken off of taxes just like a cash donation can.
I was thinking that maybe a little sign posted in a few places might help get some donations.
Now I just have to figure out what to say on it. I was thinking of using the following line as the main intro:
Maybe this would be better.
Hmm I was just looking at both of the sentences and thought "they would go well together on one sign"
I could put the top sentence at the top of the paper reminding the public about the need for money to provide for these critters and then the next line could go under that.
Hmm I am going to work on this more. Maybe I could add this to our website ( Animal Welfare Assosiation of Warrenton, MO ) on Petfinder.com (gee I hope I got this link thing right)
