Hello everyone I have a very good friend that has a niece that is currently being held in the Missouri Department of Corrections. I do not know the exact details of her incarceration and that is not the point anyway. The problem is that she is suffering a tooth infection that is not being treated not even with meds. Her sister has sent an email that give a little more information about the details and I am going to just copy and paste it here, because it is her intention to let everyone know about the poor health care her sister is being provided, and I am willing to help her get the message out. (I have not edited or anything this is the letter of one concerned sister for another)
On Behalf of my sister Kalynne Graves,To Whom It May Concern:My name is Katherine Holloway. My sister is Kalynne Graves, and she is incarcerated in St. Louis County jail in Clayton Missouri. The night my sister was incarcerated she was on her way home from the hospital because she had a terribly infected tooth. She received antibiotics for the tooth, but unless she received either a root canal or extraction the infection would return. I know this because I have worked as a dental assistant for several years. Unfortunately she was arrested and incarcerated and did not receive any p ost-op care. Even though the infection was cleaned out prior to her arrest, she let her guards now that she now needed further care. They allowed her to remain on antibiotics and ibuprophen for the first seven days of her incarceration, and then nothing. This was two months ago. And as I knew it would, the infection has returned. It is an upper molar that is infected. I am very concerned about this is because if the infection remains untreated it could get into her bloodstream and spread to her brain and cause further complications that could ultimately cause death. It has enraged me and my family that this matter is being grossly overlooked because she is an inmate. She may be incarcerated, but she is still human and deserves proper medical care. I do not want to get a call from anyone telling me my sister has died from unknown medical reasons. To me they would not be unknown. It would be the fault of the MO Department of Corrections for ignoring this. I will personally hold them responsible for any neglect that could hurt my sister. I have tried to contact several people, including my sister’s attorney, with not so much as a courtesy call in return. I will be forwarding this email to everyone I know and instructing them to pass it on, and so on. Next I will be contacting news channels, posting blogs on the internet, and even protesting outside the jail if I have to in order to get her the care that she needs. I sincerely hope that this mat ter will be resolved so that my sisters tooth infection and the excruciating pain that she is in will be taken care of quickly and efficiently. I would appreciate someone contacting me when this is received to inform me of what, if any, actions will be taken.A very disappointed Missouri Taxpayer,Katherine Holloway
I am not sure yet what can be done at this point, but I wanted to share her plea for concern. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Cinders.
Update (4/29): I have heard from my friend and she tells me that her niece is getting the antibiotics she needs for her tooth infection. As soon as the infection is under control she will be allowed to get her root canal.
Thanks everyone for your supportive thoughts and information.
Yesterday I went in to my Mom and Dad's to visit, do their taxes, and check out the anti-virus protection problem on my Dad's computer. Oh and I was also going to my sister's to do her taxes too later that night.
I got the taxes all prepared and e-filed for my parent's. I had lunch with mom, dad decided to eat something else later. I went with dad to the near by Best Buy and purchased a new up to date anti-virus software program because it turns out that his was a couple years expired. Thank goodness he did not ever have any problems with getting some virus while the old software was expired.
I have gotten my roommates, my best friends, and my parent's taxes all prepared and e-filed. I am almost done with mine as well. I did not get my sister's done last night, because as usual (she does this every year) she forgot to get some of the information gathered together. Of course she did not remember until I was about to e-file what I thought was completed tax preparations, then she realized she had left out a whole set of expenses to be used in her itemized deductions. Thank goodness she realized before I actually had e-filed and I can just go back and edit the info. I would have hated to have to prepare an adjusted filing form. I should have caught it myself sooner, but I was being a bit optimistic and thinking that maybe for once she actually had everything ready and waiting for me.
It is okay though because I had fun visiting with her. Mom had come over with me, and my sister's boyfriend had joined us for dinner. It was great. She is supposed to be getting the rest of her info together so that I can go back in either tomorrow or on Saturday to finish her taxes. I told her I would do it one of those two days because it would fit in with me driving all the way to a store that is near by her and I would not have to make separate trips for each thing.
I will probably have mine all done by the end of the weekend too. so this will be nice. My other best friend did ask me about taking a look at the taxes for her and her husband, so I may have one more set to do after I get mine done but I do not mind.
Hi
Everyone, sorry I have not been keeping up. I notice that we have some new members, I am glad that you were able to find the group.
We are having that lovely on/off nasty weather that comes every year about this time. Today it is sleeting at the house again. There are actually still parts of our rural road that are iced from last week. Even though it had gotten well above freezing on Friday and slightly above on other days, these particular sections do not get very much sun so they take much much longer to clear up in the winter. I just hope this weather does not mess up my drive into my sister's for Xmas. I am not worried about the presents, I just want the yummy food my mom and sister make, and the chance to watch a dvd with them after the festivities.
I am going to try to get out in a little while to go check an area where I spotted a dog running loose yesterday, on my way to an appointment. She was a friendly enough dog but scared of the car, so I did not have time to coax her into it. I looked for her on my way home yesterday but did not see her, I hope she went home or at least found a warm place to sleep. I have never seen this dog in the area and neither has my friend, that lives closer to where I spotted her. That is what has me wanting to go back out to look. The poor thing did not have a collar and she was just a touch thin, not starving thin, just a but underweight. I picked up extra treats yesterday before heading home so that if I saw her again I could use them to try to coax her into the car and bring her here were it is warm. My roommate has a scanner from when we used to foster, so if I get the dog home I can scan her for a chip to see if she has an owner looking for her.
This week I am not doing much work wise because the job I am on is waiting for parts and it does not look like they will get here until next week. Right now things are so tight that it is better to take a couple of days off for the company and not go to the union hall for work, because the wait at the union hall would be even longer.
Wow I e-filed my roommates taxes on the 1st and she already has her state refund direct deposited into her checking this morning. Thats just 6 calendar days and only 4 business days. I hope my other best friend's taxes get direct deposited that fast, I did her taxes for her on the 1st also, but later in the day so maybe she will get her refund late today or tomorrow. Either way I am glad that I got all of the taxes done for the 3 of us. Now I just have to do my sister's and her boyfriend's (well that is if he ask, I do not just volunteer). I also told my Dad that I would take a look at his taxes to see if they were too difficult for me to do or not, if they are not too bad I am going to do Mom and Dad's taxes too so they do not have to pay someone a large fee to plug numbers in software.
